Where are YOU leaving your cell phone at night?

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up or go to sleep at night? For many of us with smartphones, the answer is check our phones. We tend to check our phones right before we sleep to make sure we have responded back to everyone we have communicated with that day. Similarly we check our phones in the morning to see if we have received any text messages or phone calls while we were asleep. As a result, we leave our cell phones in close proximity to where we sleep. Often, people tend to use this time while they are asleep to charge their phones. However, several studies have indicated that keeping our cell phones next to us when we sleep can pose serious threats to our health.

So what’s so wrong with leaving our phones plugged in next to us? First of all, cell phones emit a specific type of radiofrequency energy. This is a non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation, which can be absorbed by the tissues in our body. Although there has not been any full proof evidence on the link between non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation and cancer, it is still something to keep in mind. Most of us tend to go to bed for at least 6 to 7 hours every night. As a result, we are exposing ourselves to 6 to 7 hours of this non ionizing radiation. Although we may not get cancer, there is still a high risk for it.

Studies have been shown to determine the effects of cell phone use on our brain tissues. As a result, researchers have identified that brain tissues on the side we hold our cell phones, metabolize more glucose than the other side. This study doesn’t prove that cell phones metabolize glucose molecules in our brain, nor does it indicate that we our damaging our brain tissues. It does however make us re-evaluate what we are putting near our beds when we go to sleep.

Not only is it risky to place our cell phones near our beds at night, it is also damaging to the cell phone itself. It may be convenient to wake up in the morning with a 100% battery life however this also damages the battery. Leaving a 100% battery plugged in to charge can drain the battery life and ultimately ruin your phone.

Health officials have stated the importance of keeping our cell phones away from us when we go to sleep and minimizing the usage during the day. The American Cancer Society (ACS) states that the “IARC classification means that there could be some risk associated with cancer, but the evidence is not strong enough to be considered causal and needs to be investigated further”.

With that in mind, although there are no serious health consequences, you should probably just stick to keeping it safe and not keeping your phone right next to you when going to sleep. It’s really not that hard to make the extra trip right before going to sleep to place your phone in the other room. Especially when it could save you the potential risk of someday getting cancer.
