What Are We Detoxifying?

Detoxify. It’s a word everyone is surely familiar with in the 21st century.  People have become obsessed with “detoxifying” their body and really cleansing it. It’s one of the most popular trends I noticed while growing up in California. Juice bars came out with detoxifying smoothies and juices. But really what are we all so concerned about detoxifying? What are we trying to get rid of? It’s the toxins. Toxins are substances that “have the ability to cause harm to organs or biochemical processes away from the site on the body where exposure occurred”(Nadakavukaren 153). Not only is it important to detoxify our bodies, but it’s also important to make it a habit to avoid toxins in the future.

Toxins are not only harmful to our bodies physically, but mentally as well. Toxins affect our neurotransmitters, which are chemicals that transmit signals from a neuron to a cell through the synapse resulting in an action.  When toxins enter our body, they attack and damage the neuron bundles, which doesn’t allow for certain neurotransmitters to fire. In particular, toxins can mess up the firing of dopamine and serotonin that are neurotransmitters related to our emotions. This neuron damage leads to bigger impacts than one can think.

About 350 million people suffer from depression around the world and some of it may be due to toxins. The damage of the neuron bundles can lead to depression, anxiety, addiction, migraines, insomnia, chronic pain, Parkinson’s, cancer and ADD/ADHD (overcome depression). Essentially, detoxifying our bodies can seem like an unnecessary thing to do although it is very crucial. So what exactly are these toxins causing such a bad effect on bodies? There’s a wide range of toxins, from herbicides to pesticides, and environmental toxins.

Toxins can enter our bodies through inhaling, eating, and just being exposed to certain poisons. The major environmental toxins are polychlorinated biphenyls, dioxins, asbestosis, mercury, and lead. In particular, asbestosis has lead to the greatest amount of deaths and disabilities. This toxic substance is used in brake linings, insulation, textiles, roofing paper, pipes for clean water, and in cement construction materials. Exposure to this substance through inhalation of tiny fibers is mostly removed after entering the lung through cells, but some traces of it stay. The particles that stay in the lungs can cause asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.

Another toxin spread through the air, as well as food, is lead. Lead is used in so many industrial products such as paint, metal, and cables. Ingesting lead contaminated foods and inhaling lead through paint chips causes diseases such as anemia, kidney damage, and problems with fertility/child bearing children. It also affects infants the most because of their sensitivity to the barrier of blood to brain. As more and more children are exposed to toxins that enter into their blood, it affects their brain and development. For both children and adults, exposure to toxins affects mental health.

Toxins aren’t just entered into our bodies through the food we eat, but through our environment as well. Although we may not realize how harmful buying an old house with asbestos can be, the most important thing to do is constantly detoxify our bodies and make sure we are educated about all the possible toxins surrounding us. Just this small task can lead to a happier, disease free life.  Are you sure you are living a toxin-free life? You may want to detoxify your body starting tomorrow.

Great post! It’s really interesting how the negative effects of toxins in our food can impact us at a neurological level.

Very interesting! It’s amazing how much toxic material is always in contact with our body and how eventually it’ll effect us.
